Some guinea pig varieties have substantially longer hair than others, as you can see below. Peruvian guinea pigs’ hair can grow up to twenty inches long! Animals with this amount of hair need a lot of grooming, so many people who are just intending to keep guinea pigs as pets choose either to cut the hair short or to choose a shorter haired variety, such as a Self or a Rex. Some guinea pigs may dislike having such long hair, as they can have their vision and movement impaired.
Be prepared to do quite a bit of grooming if you choose a long-haired guinea pig
If you’re willing to invest a little more time in your guinea pigs, Peruvian, Silkies, and Lunkyaras have hair that’s not only attractive but very popular at guinea pig shows. Although grooming these animals takes quite a lot of time, many owners and pets find it fun and the exemplar versions of some of the breeds are quite spectacular.
Guinea pigs with long hair include:
- Peruvian
- Lunkyara
