How to Handle Chickens

Give a Hen a Hug

Over the years, we've found that the easiest way to get the hens used to being handled is to try taking them out of the coop after they've been roosting for 10-15 minutes at night.

They will be drowsy and less likely to panic and flap when you pick them up so it’s less daunting for you too. If you cuddle them for a few minutes each night, after around a week, they'll be more used to human contact and won't be so scared of you. When they start laying, they'll also do a funny little squatting tap dance when you approach as they think you're a cockerel and are preparing to mate! This makes it much easier to just scoop them up and give them a cuddle as they're too busy tap dancing to run away!
